Austria's Far-Right Declares 'New Era' After Election Win. Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) has claimed a historic victory in the latest elections with leader Herbert Kickl declaring the start of a new era. The FPÖ secured 29.2% of the vote, placing it ahead of the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP), which won 26.5%. Despite this lead, the FPÖ fell short of a majority and the ÖVP has refused to join a coalition under Kickl’s leadership. Kickl praised voters for their optimism and trust, calling the win a piece of history. The election, with a high turnout of nearly 75%, was heavily focused on migration, the economy, and the war in Ukraine. Chancellor Karl Nehammer of the ÖVP criticized Kickl’s stance, stating it’s impossible to form a government with someone who promotes conspiracy theories.
