Super Typhoon Fung-Wong Kills Four in the Philippines After Mass Evacuations. Super Typhoon Fung-Wong, one of the strongest storms to hit the Philippines this year, has killed four people as authorities begin assessing the damage. More than one million people were evacuated ahead of the storm’s landfall on Luzon island, which was lashed by fierce winds, torrential rain, and storm surges. Officials say early indications suggest the death toll “will be minimal,” according to civil defence senior official Raffy Alejandro. Two children were killed in Nueva Vizcaya when a mudslide buried their home, while other towns in Aurora province were cut off by landslides. The storm weakened slightly on Monday, with winds of 130–160 kph, but continued to threaten coastal flooding and heavy rains. Fung-Wong is the 21st storm to hit the Philippines this year, following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed 224 people last week. The typhoon is now heading northeast toward Taiwan, where authorities have begun evacuating residents from flood-prone areas. Taiwan’s western coast is expected to face the brunt of the storm by Wednesday, with warnings of possible flooding and storm surges.
