Americans Cut Back Amid Economic Jitters and Tariff Turmoil. American consumers are tightening their belts as economic anxiety grows. A recent KPMG survey of 2,500 adults reveals many are delaying big purchases and scaling back everyday spending. The reason? Lingering impacts of the pandemic, rising inflation, and fresh uncertainty triggered by former President Donald Trump's fluctuating tariff policies. The survey, conducted in April, found that 68% of respondents are unwilling to take on new debt, and 43% are putting off buying a car due to tariffs. Even small choices are shifting—70% are switching to free, ad-supported TV instead of paid streaming services. Meanwhile, new technologies are reshaping lives. Nearly half of those surveyed said generative AI is significantly influencing both personal and professional routines. And on the education front, half now believe a college degree isn't essential for a well-paying job.
