Functional fitness: Why it should be a priority. Functional fitness is a type of strength training that prepares your body for everyday tasks and activities, including twisting, bending, pulling, pushing and more. As we approach the end of the year, many of us will soon be thinking about fitness goals, so why not try functional fitness? Jon Booker, fitness expert at Westfield Health, explains why this type of strength training should be a priority in 2025. ”Move over bicep curls and triceps extensions - there has been a steady increase in interest in functional fitness over other workouts. This style of training focuses on movements that mimic real-life activities, improving strength, mobility and balance in ways that support everyday tasks." Jon begins. He continues, "Unlike traditional isolated exercises, functional fitness prioritises compound movements using equipment like kettlebells, resistance bands, and even body weight.” As well as improving your fitness, this type of exercise can help reduce the risk of injury, improve posture, and enhance your overall quality of life. Jon goes on to explain that functional exercise can also benefit those who work at a desk every day. ”As work becomes increasingly remote, people are looking for workout routines that counteract the physical strains of desk work, like poor posture and stiffness. Functional fitness targets these issues by enhancing core strength, posture and joint mobility, making it easier for workers to handle the demands of sitting for long hours." the fitness expert says. He adds, "Those who engage in regular functional training are less likely to experience work-related injuries and more likely to feel energised throughout the day.” Jon also points out that fitness can benefit you mentally, as it can increase your productivity and general wellbeing. ”Employers and fitness enthusiasts have begun to recognise this and offering functional fitness programs as part of workplace wellness initiatives can encourage people to seek practical, sustainable workouts that align with their daily routine." The expert concludes.
