How to tackle your child's stress-induced eczema. Children are often bombarded with new experiences such as changing schools, making friends and simply growing up, which can be stressful. Ali Hedley, Clinical Engagement Manager at Epaderm says: ”Skin is the body's first line of defence, and it's incredibly sensitive to what's happening in our lives.” "When children experience stress - whether it's the fear of a new school year or the pressure of homework - it's not uncommon for their skin to react.”. ”Stress hormones like cortisol can lead to dryness, irritation, and even trigger flare-ups of conditions like eczema. It's almost like the skin is expressing what the child might not be able to put into words.” How to manage stress-related skin flare-ups. Recognise the signs Knowing what causes eczema flare-ups and recognising the signs will help you manage the symptoms. ”Stress-related skin issues can manifest in several ways, including redness, dryness, and itchy patches. For children with eczema, these symptoms may worsen under stress. Being aware of these signs and taking early action can help prevent further discomfort.” Prioritise self-care The first step is to make sure your child is getting enough sleep, exercise and good food. ”Ensuring your child gets adequate sleep, exercises regularly, and maintains a healthy diet can improve their overall well-being, which will be reflected in healthier skin.” Stay hydrated Drinking water throughout the day can help relieve dry skin. ”Stress-induced dry skin is often the result of hormonal imbalances leading to a lack of moisture. Encourage your child to drink plenty of water to keep their skin hydrated.” Moisturise regularly Introduce moisturising into their daily routine. ”Incorporating regular moisturising into your child's skincare routine is a simple yet effective way to combat dry, irritated skin.” Ali recommends using fragrance-free and steroid-free creams such as Epaderm Cream and Epaderm Ointment to calm irritated skin.
