Halloween make-up: The eye health risks. Halloween make-up often includes glitters, pigments and adhesives that can easily enter the eye, leading to discomfort or even more serious conditions. While the upcoming spooky season is a time for joy and creativity, it's important to be cautious when applying products in and around the eyes. According to leading ophthalmologist, Dr Elizabeth Hawkes, improper use of make-up and contact lenses can pose serious risks to your eye health and increase the risk of issues such as blepharitis, inflammation of the eyelid margin, which "is crucial to maintaining tear film quality and a healthy ocular surface". Meanwhile, coloured contact lenses can lead to corneal abrasions (scratches on the eye) and severe eye infections if used incorrectly. Hawkes has partnered with Optase to share tips on how to enjoy Halloween products safely. Buy contact lenses from a reputable source Coloured contact lenses are a popular addition to many Halloween costumes, but they can be harmful to your eyes. "Always get coloured contact lenses from a licensed eye care professional, and never share lenses with others," the experts at Optase state. "Avoid buying lenses from novelty stores. Poor-quality lenses or incorrect fittings can lead to serious eye problems.” Be cautious with glitter Glitter may enhance your look, but it can also be harmful to your eyes. "If you must use glitter, opt for products specifically designed for use around the eyes and be careful when applying and removing them," the experts at Optase advise. Remove make-up and contact lenses properly As well as applying your make-up correctly, it is also important to remove it carefully and avoid rubbing it into your eyes. "At the end of the night, it's essential to gently and thoroughly remove both your make-up and contact lenses to avoid long-term damage," the experts insist. "Rubbing harshly or using alcohol-based removers can damage your eyes.” Avoid harsh ingredients When choosing your make-up, it is important to be aware of the ingredients, especially if you have sensitive eyes. "Ingredients like preservatives, sulphates, and fragrances in make-up can aggravate the sensitive skin of the eyelids, leading to irritation, dryness, and even allergic reactions," Dr Hawkes warns. If you're prone to sensitivity, the experts recommend using gentle, ophthalmologist-approved products like Optase Life Sensitive Eye Makeup Remover.
