Waste Incineration Becomes UK's Most Polluting Power Source. Burning household waste to produce electricity has become the dirtiest method of power generation in the UK, according to a BBC analysis. Nearly half of UK household rubbish, including a growing amount of plastic, is now incinerated. Scientists warn this practice is disastrous for the climate producing the same level of greenhouse gases as coal power, which the UK recently phased out. Some are even calling for a ban on new incinerators. The government initially turned to waste-burning power plants to reduce landfill emissions but the number of incinerators has surged in the past five years, especially in England. Currently, 3.1% of the UK’s energy comes from burning waste. However, the Environmental Services Association, representing waste firms, claims that emissions from waste management are difficult to avoid.
