AI to Aid Doctors in Detecting Broken Bones, Promises Faster Diagnosis and Fewer Missed Fractures. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) suggests that AI can help reduce missed cases of broken bones during X-ray analysis by doctors, BBC News reports. Research indicates that AI technology is safe and could speed up diagnosis, easing the burden on healthcare providers and potentially reducing follow-up appointments. NICE is set to recommend four AI tools for urgent care in England while further evidence is gathered. Every X-ray image analyzed by AI will still be reviewed by a healthcare professional, ensuring human oversight. According to NICE, broken bones are missed in 3-10% of cases, making it the most common diagnostic error in emergency departments. The NHS in England faces significant shortages, with a 12.5% vacancy rate for radiologists and 15% for radiographers. Mark Chapman from NICE emphasizes that AI can ease the workload for radiologists and radiographers, making their jobs easier and more efficient. The use of AI might speed up the identification of fractures, reducing the need for additional follow-up appointments after missed diagnoses. NICE states that AI use is "unlikely" to increase incorrect diagnoses or unnecessary referrals since radiologists will verify AI analyses. NICE has opened a consultation on the draft guidance for this AI application in healthcare, set to conclude on November 5.
