MPs to Vote on Controversial Welfare Bill as Labour Unrest Persists. Dozens of Labour MPs are still set to vote against the government’s welfare bill, despite recent concessions.Last week, the government reversed course, stating stricter eligibility for personal independence payments (PIP) would only apply to new claimants after November 2024. Additionally, ministers promised a review of the assessment process in collaboration with disability organizations, due by autumn 2026. However, more than 120 Labour MPs had already signed an amendment to block the legislation. Some MPs have criticized the changes, questioning the rationale for altering criteria before the review is complete. While Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall defended the bill, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch vowed to oppose it, citing the increasing cost of benefits and a lack of meaningful savings. Many MPs believe the reforms won’t be as effective as planned.
