Trump and Democrats Both See Opportunity in Paxton Senate Victory. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate after defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn. It has been a bitter and expensive primary runoff heavily shaped by President Donald Trump’s endorsement of Paxton. The result represented a major victory for the MAGA wing of the Republican Party and underscored Trump’s continued dominance over GOP primaries. At the same time, Democrats privately welcomed Paxton’s nomination, believing his legal controversies and history of scandal could make the general election more competitive. Democratic nominee James Talarico has already framed the race as a contest between ordinary voters and political corruption, as he tackles a traditionally Republican state. Republican strategists had spent tens of millions of dollars trying to stop Paxton, fearing he would be more vulnerable than Cornyn in the upcoming elections. Despite those concerns, many Texas Republicans quickly rallied behind Paxton after the runoff, including Senator Ted Cruz and Governor Greg Abbott. Ken Paxton has gained notoriety lately by filing a lawsuit against Netflix, claiming the company illegally collected and monetised users’ personal data -including children’s data- while using addictive platform features like autoplay.
