LinkedIn Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Use of Private Messages for AI Training. A lawsuit alleges LinkedIn secretly shared private messages of Premium users to train artificial intelligence (AI) models, BBC News reports. The lawsuit claims LinkedIn introduced a privacy setting in August 2023, automatically opting users into a program that allowed third-party access to their personal data. In September 2023, LinkedIn allegedly amended its privacy policy to permit user data to be disclosed for AI training, sparking accusations of concealment. A LinkedIn spokesperson told the BBC the allegations are “false claims with no merit.” The lawsuit states LinkedIn updated its FAQs to let users opt out of data sharing but did not reverse training already conducted with their data. Filed in a California federal court, the lawsuit seeks $1,000 per affected user for alleged violations of the US federal Stored Communications Act, plus additional damages for breach of contract and unfair competition. An email from LinkedIn clarified that user data sharing for AI purposes has not been enabled in the UK, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland. LinkedIn, with over 1 billion users worldwide, has nearly a quarter of its user base in the United States. In 2023, LinkedIn generated $1.7 billion in revenue from Premium subscriptions, with subscriber growth accelerating due to added AI features. The lawsuit accuses LinkedIn of attempting to “cover its tracks,” suggesting the company knowingly violated privacy promises and aimed to avoid public scrutiny.
