Nepal Increases Everest Climbing Permit Fees Amid Overcrowding Concerns. Nepal announces a sharp rise in Mount Everest climbing permit fees, marking the first increase in nearly a decade. Starting September, climbers will pay $15,000 during peak season, a 36% hike from the previous $11,000 fee. Fees for off-season climbs (September to November) will also increase to $7,500, with a further rise for December to February. Permit fees are a major revenue source for Nepal, contributing over 4% to the country's economy through tourism. Climbing experts have long criticized the government for issuing about 300 permits per year, contributing to overcrowding on Everest. It remains unclear if the price increase will reduce demand or address concerns about overcrowding on the mountain. In response to overcrowding, Nepal's army has conducted annual clean-ups of Everest, removing tonnes of garbage and human remains. Nepal’s Supreme Court ordered a limit on mountaineering permits, although no specific cap has been set for Everest yet.
