Pellizzari claims Vuelta stage 17 as protests cast shadow. Italy’s Giulio Pellizzari stormed to victory on stage 17 of the Vuelta a España, finishing ahead of Britain’s Tom Pidcock after a gruelling summit climb on the Alto de El Morredero. The 21-year-old attacked with just over three kilometres to go on the 143-kilometre route. Pidcock crossed the line second while Pellizzari’s Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe teammate Jai Hindley took third. Race leader Jonas Vingegaard placed fourth, gaining precious seconds over rival Joao Almeida to extend his overall advantage to 50 seconds. But the race continues under a cloud. Riders are considering withdrawing after repeated pro-Palestine protests disrupted multiple stages including one that ended early and another with no winner declared. A flag-waving protester even triggered a crash on stage 15. For now, the focus remains on Pellizzari’s breakthrough win but the uncertainty surrounding the race is far from over.
