Cutting-edge 3D technology has been used to preserve Jimmy Carter's famous handmade furniture. In childhood, the former US President developed a huge passion for woodworking and continued his hobby into retirement as an escape from the pressures of politics. Now, thanks to researchers from the University of South Florida his creations will live on due to advanced techniques such as structured light scanning and photogrammetry. One particularly meaningful aspect of the project is President Carter's personal touches on many of the pieces. The initials "J.C." are carved into the underside of certain items, and a rose adornment appears on a chest crafted for former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. The U.S. National Park Service plans to enlist skilled woodworking artisans from around the world to use the data from the digital models to create exact replicas.
