Apple Accused of Enforcing Illegal Workplace Rules by U.S. Labor Board. The U.S. labor board has issued a complaint accusing Apple of violating employee rights related to organizing and workplace advocacy, REUTERS reports. Apple is accused of enforcing illegal confidentiality, non-disclosure, and non-compete agreements across the U.S., along with broad misconduct and social media policies. The complaint alleges Apple interfered with employees’ rights to discuss wages, work conditions, and advocacy, violating federal labor laws. Apple denies these claims, stating it has always respected employees' rights to discuss working conditions, and plans to defend itself at the hearing. If Apple doesn’t settle, an administrative judge will hear the case in January 2025, with the possibility of requiring Apple to rescind these rules. The complaint stems from charges filed in 2021 by former senior engineering manager Ashley Gjovik, who alleges Apple’s rules stifled discussions on pay equity and discrimination. Gjovik also filed a separate lawsuit claiming Apple retaliated against her for filing complaints and attempting to organize workers. A judge recently dismissed parts of her case but allowed her to amend others. Apple faces at least two other National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) cases, including one involving alleged retaliation against an employee at its headquarters. Apple is also accused of interfering with a union campaign at a retail store in Atlanta, though the company denies any wrongdoing. Since 2022, two Apple stores in the U.S. have unionized, and more locations are reportedly considering joining union efforts.
