US Reinstates Sanctions On UN Expert Francesca Albanese. The United States has reinstated sanctions against Francesca Albanese, according to an updated Treasury Department notice. Albanese was originally sanctioned in July 2025 over efforts to encourage the International Criminal Court to investigate U.S. and Israeli officials. The sanctions had briefly been suspended earlier this month after a federal judge ruled they likely violated her free speech rights. U.S. District Judge Richard Leon sided with a legal challenge brought by Albanese’s husband and daughter. However, a federal appeals court later issued an administrative stay allowing the government to enforce the sanctions again while the case proceeds. The appeals court stressed the move was procedural and not a final judgment on the legality of the sanctions. Albanese has been a vocal critic of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and has repeatedly called for international accountability measures. The case has intensified debate over free speech, international law and Washington’s stance toward criticism of Israel.
