A turtle has made its way back to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico after being stranded over 5,000 miles from its home.
Following her rescue by a commercial fishing boat, Boeier, a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle, was taken to Rotterdam Zoo, where she was treated for cold shock and nursed back to health. Named after the vessel that saved her, Boeier faced a long journey back to Texas, requiring months of coordination and special permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Upon arriving in Houston on Oct. 29, Boeier was given a thorough medical check by Houston Zoo veterinarians. Blood tests, radiographs, and physical exams confirmed her readiness for release. With no signs of pneumonia or infection, Boeier’s health was excellent.
On Nov. 4, researchers from Texas A&M University’s Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research fitted her with a tracking device to monitor her journey in the Gulf. Boeier was then brought to Stewart Beach in Galveston, marking the end of her year-long journey and her long-awaited return home.
