Mamdani Approves 12-Hour NYPD Shifts During World Cup. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has approved 12-hour shifts for most New York City Police Department officers during part of this summer’s World Cup period. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch told officers the longer shifts will run from July 1 to July 7 because of “unprecedented demands.” The city is preparing for major events including the FIFA World Cup, July 4 celebrations and Sail 250 festivities. Officials warned additional 12-hour deployments could be added closer to the World Cup final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium. The move is expected to significantly increase police overtime spending, an issue Mamdani previously criticized during his mayoral campaign. Before taking office, Mamdani had pledged to reduce NYPD overtime costs, which regularly approach $1 billion annually. Some progressive allies, including City Council member Tiffany Cabán, have previously criticized high police overtime spending. City officials expect up to 1.2 million visitors during the World Cup period, while police cited heightened security concerns linked to global conflicts including the war involving Iran.
