On Monday at noon, Lineker announced via social media that he was leaving the broadcaster early “by mutual consent.” His role in the 2026 World Cup has been cancelled. The BBC confirmed his exit, ending a 26-year tenure that began in 1999 and made him the face of “Match of the Day” and the corporation’s highest-paid presenter. His departure follows years of tension around impartiality, with Lineker previously suspended for criticising the UK government’s asylum policies. Next season, the show will be led by Gabby Logan, Mark Chapman and Kelly Cates, marking the first time three presenters will share the iconic role.
