Milei Says 'Winds Of Change' Favour Argentina's Falkland Islands Claim. Argentine President Javier Milei has said "winds of change" around the world are becoming favourable to Argentina's sovereignty claim over the Falkland Islands. Milei cited President Donald Trump's comments that the United States was reviewing its historic position regarding the islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina. Trump also suggested the UK could not necessarily count on U.S. support in a future territorial dispute, criticising Britain for not helping during the Iran war. The U.S. currently recognises Britain's de facto administration of the Falklands but does not formally take a position on the competing sovereignty claims. Milei argued that Argentina's growing alignment with Western powers made it an increasingly valuable strategic partner for the United States. The Argentine leader announced plans to accelerate sanctions against companies involved in oil extraction around the islands, citing the Navitas and Rockhopper offshore project. The UK reaffirmed its sovereignty over the Falklands, citing the islanders' right to self-determination.
