Gabriel Attal Is France’s New Prime Minister. France's education minister has been named the country's new prime minister. CNN reports that the historic appointment by President Emmanuel Macron comes as an attempt to jumpstart his party's faltering popularity. Attal will become France's youngest prime minister ever and the first openly gay man to hold the position. "I know I can count on your energy and your commitment.", Emmanuel Macron, French President, via X. Atal has served as France's minister of education and national youth since July. Prior to serving as the country's education minister, Atal served as a government spokesperson and later as minister of public works and public accounts. Attal, a rising star of Macron's Renaissance party, will replace outgoing Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who announced her resignation on January 8. Borne's resignation comes following a chaotic 20-month tenure that was marked by unpopular reforms and an urban riot sparked by the police shooting of a teenage boy of Algerian descent. With Atal's appointment, Macron appears to be attempting a political reset ahead of upcoming European elections. As prime minister, Atal will be charged with forming a new government and safeguarding legislation that supports the president's agenda.
