eBay to Lay Off 1,000 Workers. In a blog post on Jan. 23, eBay CEO Jamie Iannone announced that the online retailer would be cutting about 9% of its workforce, NPR reports. Iannone said that eBay's staff and expenses "have outpaced the growth of our business". eBay is also terminating relationships with several outside contractors, NPR reports. Both decisions are intended to help the company remain "nimble" as it faces a "challenging" economy. Those who are laid off will be notified in a Zoom meeting. Iannone asked U.S. employees to work from home on Jan. 24 to "provide some space and privacy for these conversations". eBay, a $21 billion company that was founded in 1995. has been affected by Amazon and other e-commerce platforms. The company also let go of 500 workers in February of last year as it attempts to regain its footing following the end of the pandemic boom.
