A guide to keeping your gym kit bacteria free. Washing your gym clothes and equipment regularly may be a hassle, but it will benefit your overall wellbeing and prolong the life of your gym equipment. Matt Bishop, spokesperson for Viking Extrusions, has revealed the dirtiest items in your gym bag and how to clean them properly.Yoga mats: Cleaning your yoga mat regularly is recommended as you are likely to sweat when using it. "Yoga mats gather dirt and sweat during workouts, which can seep into their porous material, creating a haven for bacteria," Matt says. "To maintain cleanliness, wipe them down after each session using a disinfectant spray or a water-vinegar solution. A monthly deep clean with mild detergent and water can help eliminate stubborn stains.” Water bottles Cleaning your water bottle between uses is essential to prevent the growth of bacteria and mould. ”A periodic deep cleanse using a mixture of baking soda and water, scrubbed with a bottle brush, helps eliminate residue from hard-to-reach areas. Separate bottles for different drinks to prevent lingering odours and tastes.” Fitness clothing Sweaty gym clothes can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can cause potential health risks. ”Wash clothes immediately after workouts to prevent bacterial buildup, treating stains beforehand to ensure they're completely gone. Opt for low heat or air drying technical fabrics to prolong their lifespan.” Gym shoes You should find time to air out your gym shoes regularly to avoid moisture build-up. ”Using shoe deodorant or sprinkling baking soda inside can help maintain freshness and hygiene. Rotating between pairs gives each set enough time to completely dry out before their next use.” Towels Gym towels are primarily used to wipe away sweat, so it is important that they are washed as often as possible. “Sun-drying can keep your towels even cleaner due to the natural antibacterial properties of UV rays."Fitness trackers If you wear your fitness tracker while you sweat and don't clean it regularly, it's likely to have picked up a lot of bacteria and dirt. ”For silicone-based fitness trackers, avoid using harsh cleaners or submerging them in water to prevent damage and ensure longevity.” THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
