Employees Are Resentful About Return to Office Mandates, Survey Finds. 'Fortune' reports that many organizations are abandoning remote work in favor of returning to the office full-time or introducing hybrid models with part-time in-office hours. According to a recent survey by BetterUp, the number of primarily remote roles has been cut in half. The survey found that one out of four organizations cited improved connection and culture as the reasoning behind mandating a return to the office. However, another survey by 'Fortune' found that returning to the office often causes a major disruption to people's routines, their work and overall experience of life. A survey of 1,400 full-time U.S. employees found that those who were mandated to return to the office had higher levels of burnout, stress and desire to seek employment elsewhere. Mandated return-to-office orders also were found to result in lower trust in the organization, reduced engagement and declines in productivity levels. 'Fortune' found that the most challenging aspect of returning to the office for most people was the commute. This falls in line with research that suggests commutes of just 30 minutes have been linked with higher stress and anger. Commutes of 45 minutes or longer have been linked to reduced overall well-being, mood and health. The second-most challenging aspect of returning to work was found to be the loss of flexibility to accomplish home tasks, like doing laundry, while also working.
