Zelensky Fires Top Ukrainian Army Commander. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has replaced his top army commander, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, nearly two years into the country's war with Russia. Zelenksy took to X on Feb. 8 to thank Zaluzhnyi for his service, 'The Guardian' reports. In his post, Zelensky detailed the need for "renewed leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine". He also asked Zaluzhnyi "to remain part of the team". Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine's land forces commander, has been appointed as Zaluzhnyi's replacement. The move is seen as a risky decision for Zelensky. Frontline troops reportedly have mixed feelings about Syrskyi, who's allegedly been indifferent about the lives of soldiers. Zaluzhnyi, on the other hand, had a high approval rating. According to Zelenksy, one of Syrskyi's tasks will be to devise a "new approach to mobilization". "This is not about names, and even more so, not about politics." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, via 'The Guardian'. "This is about the system of our army, about the management in the armed forces and about involving the direct experiences of military commanders in this war."
