Germany Legalizes Recreational Marijuana. On Feb. 23, 407 lawmakers in Germany's lower house of parliament voted in favor of legalizing recreational cannabis, CNN reports. 226 lawmakers voted against the regulation, and four abstained from voting. Beginning April 1, adults age 18 and up can grow up to three marijuana plants and have 50 grams of cannabis in their possession at home. In public, adults will be able to carry 25 grams of marijuana. The new legislation has been criticized by the German Medical Associations. "The legalization of cannabis leads to more consumption and trivializes the associated risks." "Cannabis can be addictive and cause serious developmental damage." "This country does not need cannabis legalization." Klaus Reinhardt, president of the German Medical Associations, via statement. Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s health minister, disagrees. "The aim is to crack down on the black market and drugs-related crime, reduce the amount of dealing and cut the number of users." Karl Lauterbach, Germany’s health minister, via statement. Germany is the third European country to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Malta and Luxembourg also permit recreational cannabis.
