WHO Prioritises Experimental Ebola Treatments Amid Outbreak. The World Health Organization has identified three experimental treatments to be prioritised for clinical trials against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. The recommended therapies include MBP134 from Mapp Biopharmaceutical, maftivimab from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and the antiviral remdesivir from Gilead Sciences. The agency said the drugs should be tested in clinical trials to generate evidence on their effectiveness against the current outbreak. The Ebola outbreak is centred in Democratic Republic of the Congo, with additional cases reported in Uganda. WHO noted that there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments specifically designed for the Bundibugyo strain. For prevention, Gilead’s experimental antiviral obeldesivir was highlighted as a priority option for people exposed to confirmed cases. Among vaccine candidates, the single-dose rVSV Bundibugyo vaccine being developed by International AIDS Vaccine Initiative was identified as the most promising. WHO said the leading vaccine candidate is unlikely to be ready for trials for another seven to nine months while a second candidate from University of Oxford and Serum Institute of India could be tested within two to three months.
