The Royal Mint has unveiled a collection of five new designs set to grace UK commemorative coins in 2024 - including coins featuring Winston Churchill and Buckingham Palace.
The £2 coin marks the 150th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill's birth, while a £5 coin designed by Henry Gray, showcases the iconic palace's architecture, encircled by a pattern inspired by its interior, proudly displaying the Royal Standard.
A £2 coin also commemorates the National Gallery's 200th anniversary, a 50p coin honours the RNLI's 200th anniversary, and a 50p coin celebrates Team GB and ParalympicsGB at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.
For the first time, the public can collect coins bearing these distinctive designs, each encapsulating key events and anniversaries of the upcoming year.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said: “As we approach the New Year, we are excited to reveal five new designs set to appear on commemorative coins in 2024, celebrating some of the most significant moments and anniversaries set to take place. In addition to commemorating important historical events such as the RNLI’s 200th anniversary, the Annual Set also celebrates future events, like the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, with a 50p specially struck for Team GB and ParalympicsGB.
She added: “The Royal Mint has been regularly issuing Annual Sets since 1971 and they have become highly collectible as works of art. They are also gifted to people celebrating special occasions in the upcoming year, as they serve as a keepsake of that memorable time.”
Natasha Seaward, a graphic designer at The Royal Mint, crafted the £2 coin honouring Sir Winston Churchill's 150th birth anniversary. It features a young Churchill in the uniform of the 4th Queen's Own Hussars, with an edge inscription quoting Churchill's call to "Pave the way for peace and freedom."
Designed by Edwina Ellis, the National Gallery £2 coin highlights the institution's 200th anniversary, featuring the gallery's iconic building with an inscription conveying the inspiration of past artists for future generations.
John Bergdahl designed the RNLI 50p coin, commemorating the Royal National Lifeboat Institution's 200th anniversary, featuring the RNLI flag surrounded by a life ring.
The Team GB and ParalympicsGB 50p coin, designed by Charis Tsevis, symbolises unity with the Union flag, celebrating British athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The 2024 commemorative sets, available from January 2nd on The Royal Mint website, offer various precious metal and base proof finishes, with prices starting at £34.50. Individual purchases of the Buckingham Palace £5 coin, National Gallery UK £2 coin, RNLI UK 50p coin, and Team GB and ParalympicsGB UK 50p coin will be available throughout the year, while the Sir Winston Churchill 2024 UK £2 coin will be part of the 2024 Annual Sets and potentially other sets in the future.
