Nicola Sturgeon Says Husband’s Conviction Led to ‘Worst Week of My Life’. Nicola Sturgeon says she has endured the “worst week” of her life following the conviction of her estranged husband. On Monday, Peter Murrell pleaded guilty to embezzling more than £400,000 from the Scottish National Party. Speaking in Ireland, Sturgeon said she was coming to terms with the fact that she had spent years married to someone she “obviously didn't know at all”. The former SNP leader said the revelations had been painful and that she was only in the early stages of processing them. Sturgeon said she had been “misled”, “lied to” and “betrayed”, describing the situation as deeply personal as well as highly public. She also criticised attempts to link her to Murrell’s crimes, stressing that police had taken no further action against her following their investigation. Sturgeon said she learned about some of the purchases cited in court only through media reports and insisted she had never seen many of the items involved. The former first minister said people assume she should have known what was happening but argued that their combined salaries and demanding careers gave her no reason to suspect wrongdoing.
