Burnham Pledges To Get Rough Sleepers Off Streets By Christmas. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans to offer accommodation to every rough sleeper in England this winter, saying he wants to "get everyone in for Christmas”. The government will provide emergency accommodation alongside practical support for people's health and other needs, as part of a £442 million package aimed at ending the need to sleep on the streets. Ending rough sleeping was one of Burnham's first pledges after becoming prime minister in July. Homelessness charity Crisis described the announcement as a significant turning point but Conservative shadow housing secretary James Cleverley questioned how the initiative would be funded and delivered. The previous Conservative government had pledged to end rough sleeping by 2024. Official figures estimated almost 4,800 people were sleeping rough on a single night in England last autumn, nearly double the number recorded five years earlier.
