Chappell Roan recounts brutal audition for The Voice. The 27-year-old chart-topping star was a wide-eyed 15-year-old when she tried to land a slot on the hit American talent show, which sees A-list stars mentor music hopefuls. But her initial audition sounds far from supportive - as she claims a producer screening potential contestants failed to acknowledge her while she sang a rendition of Rihanna's 2012 song Stay. Opening up to W Magazine, the Pink Pony Club singer said: ”When I did The Voice audition, the producer or whoever the f**k was watching did not even look up from his phone.” "He was like, 'Okay, next.' And I went up there and sang a cappella... (It was) the scariest thing ever. He never really looked at me.” The Voice was not the only talent show Roan tried out for - as she was also rejected by the producers of America's Got Talent. ”I was 13, and we flew to Austin, Texas, and waited in line with thousands of people at 4am. I sang True Colors, by Cyndi Lauper. Did not make it either.” Talent shows' loss was music fans' gain as Roan went on to make music herself - unleashing her number 1 album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in 2023. Fans may have to wait for her second record, however, as she recently told fans during a TikTok Q&A: “New album? Great question. We're so beyond... so beyond far away from that, I could not even tell you.”
