This historic converted palace in Lake Como, Italy might be fit for a king - but is in a town with a dark secret.
Nestled in Mezzegra, Tremezzina, the Palazzo Brentano dates to the seventeenth century and belonged to one of the most influential families of Lake Como.
The Brentano family were a group of merchants who emigrated to Northern Europe during the Spanish occupation of Lombardy. Later, they returned to the lake, with the income of their successful trades.
Today, Palazzo Brentano still retains all its elegant charm, and part of its building is currently used as a city hall, where the renowned Italian painter Giulio Quaglio's ceiling frescos can be seen.
Sara Zanotta, CEO of Lakeside Real Estate, said: “Mezzegra is one of the most authentic and traditional districts (‘borgo’) of Lake Como: living at Palazzo Brentano means you're truly part of a community, surrounded by friendly Italian local families.”
However, the narrow street on which the property resides features a black cross marking the precise spot where Italy’s Fascist leader Benito Mussolini was killed together with his lover Claretta Petacci.
Mussolini was executed by anti-Fascist partisans in April 1945 after he was captured attempting to flee to Switzerland.
However, now the area on Lake Como is home to some of the most desirable residences in Europe - including the Palazzo Brentano.
Originally, the property was divided into multiple units which were internally connected. The current owner chose to link them into two main units, with separate entrances.
Both units retain many original features including vaulted ceilings, arched doors, mouldings, marble floors, shutters and ancient doors, exposed stones and bricks, and huge marble fireplaces.
The first-floor property has direct access from the street and includes two living areas, two fully equipped kitchens, two bedrooms, and two fully fitted bathrooms (one ensuite).
The unit boasts a spacious terrace with stunning lake views. The apartment is remarkably bright, thanks to the large panoramic windows and the white resin on the floor that creates an airy feel throughout.
Meanwhile, the larger ground floor unit opens onto an expansive manicured garden, featuring panoramic views of the lake and a fountain made from local stone.
Inside, there are five bedrooms, a bright entrance hall also featuring a local stone fountain, a dining area, a kitchen, a hobby room, and light-filled living rooms. Additionally, the property features a laundry room, a bathroom with marble flooring, and a gym area on the underground level.
To complete the picturesque property, there are also three garages, one private parking spot, and access to a pool, tennis yard, wellness & fitness area, and gardens.
Both units are now for sale. The first-floor property is on the market for €800,000 and the ground-floor property, comprising of five bedrooms, is €2.2 million.
