UK Remains Silent on Arrest of Netanyahu Following ICC Warrant. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper refused to say if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he visited the UK, following an ICC warrant for alleged war crimes, Sky News reports. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued warrants against Netanyahu and former defense secretary Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes related to the Gaza conflict. Cooper stated the ICC operates independently and while the UK respects international law, it does not typically involve British legal processes. Emily Thornberry, Labour chair of the foreign affairs committee, emphasized that the UK, as an ICC member, is legally required to arrest Netanyahu if he visits. The UK government reiterated its position that efforts should center on achieving a ceasefire in Gaza rather than commenting on ICC warrants. The ICC also issued an arrest warrant for Hamas leader Mohammed Al Masri for alleged war crimes, despite claims by Israel that he was killed earlier this year. Netanyahu’s office condemned the warrants as "absurd and false," rejecting the ICC's jurisdiction over Israel, which is not an ICC member. President Joe Biden called the ICC's actions "outrageous," asserting no equivalence between Israel and Hamas, a sentiment echoed by former Israeli PM Naftali Bennett. While Hungary’s Viktor Orban offered Netanyahu safe passage, France and Italy signaled they would uphold ICC obligations and arrest him if he visited. The Board of Deputies of British Jews called the ICC’s decision a “terrible message,” aligning with Israeli leaders’ condemnation of the warrants.
