Magyar Says EU Could End Hungary Rule Of Law Procedure. Hungary Prime Minister Péter Magyar said he discussed ending the EU’s Article 7 procedure with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola. Magyar said both sides agreed the process, launched in 2018 over concerns about democracy and the rule of law under former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, should be concluded by the autumn. The Article 7 procedure is often described as the EU’s “nuclear option” because it can ultimately lead to the suspension of a member state's voting rights. However, Metsola’s office offered a more cautious assessment, saying any decision would depend on continued reforms and tangible progress by the Hungarian government. The European Parliament launched the procedure against Hungary over concerns about rule-of-law backsliding during Orbán’s time in office. Since taking office in April, Magyar has called for the process to be halted and has pledged reforms aimed at unlocking more than €16 billion in frozen EU funds. Support for ending the procedure has grown among some centre-right lawmakers, including European People’s Party leader Manfred Weber. Other MEPs argue the process should remain in place until all outstanding concerns have been fully addressed and verified.
