House Rejects Standalone Israel Aid Bill. The $17.6 billion Israel aid bill was shot down by a vote of 250-180 on Feb. 6, Politico reports. While close to four dozen Democrats approved the measure, over a dozen Republicans voted against it. The White House has called the move a "cynical political maneuver" as Republicans have rejected a border security-foreign aid deal brought by the Senate. "It's just a political stunt by the Republicans and the speaker. This political stuff does not include any humanitarian assistance." Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), ranking member of the Appropriations Committee, via statement. An Israel aid bill that included IRS cuts was cleared by the House in November but lost traction in the Senate. "There’s no time for hesitation. History beckons us to act boldly and decisively to defend Israel and our own citizens." Speaker Mike Johnson alongside Amir Ohana, speaker of the Israeli Knesset, via statement. Rep. Steny Hoyer previously asked Speaker Mike Johnson to bring foreign assistance bills to the floor individually. "I believe that there are 300 votes for Ukraine. There are 400 votes for Israel." "Not putting humanitarian aid in this bill is a despicable continuation of Republican policy, which says to the American people and the rest of the world: You're on your own." Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), via statement. Progressives also want support for Palestinians, Politico reports. "There's no conditions on any aid and there's horrific stuff going on. There's no Ukraine aid in here. This is just a way for Speaker Johnson to try to change the discussion." Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, via statement.
