France to Ban US Videoconferencing Tools, Mandates Use of Home-Grown Platform Visio. France will prohibit public officials from using U.S. platforms like Google Meet, Zoom, and Teams for videoconferencing, a move to reduce reliance on American services. The ban, part of France's push for digital sovereignty, will require officials to adopt Visio, a homegrown platform developed by the Interministerial Digital Authority (Dinum). The French government’s new directive, prepared by the prime minister’s office, will be rolled out in the coming days, with plans for full adoption by 2027. The Visio platform, which runs on infrastructure provided by Outscale, is already used by 40,000 government employees, including ministries and research organizations. By 2027, the French government aims to expand Visio to 250,000 users across the public sector. This move follows last summer’s mandate for civil servants to transition from WhatsApp and Telegram to Tchap, a secure messaging service exclusive to French public official. France’s push for local digital alternatives is driven by growing concerns over data privacy and security, especially regarding U.S.-owned platforms.
