Driving Test Backlog Worsens UK Instructor Shortage. A growing backlog of driving tests in the UK is making it even harder to recruit new instructors, industry leaders warn. The government has promised more test slots each month, but trainee instructors say long delays, high costs and a complicated exam process are pushing people away from the profession. There are now over 6,000 fewer registered instructors compared to 2011, with fears the system could soon "grind to a halt” 
Auto Learners principal Elwyn Marfell-Jones says examiners are being diverted to clear the driver backlog, leaving instructor trainees stuck waiting months for tests—and facing mounting expenses. The problem, he warns, has worsened since Covid with little action taken.
