City of London Ends 800-Year Era for Smithfield Meat Market. London’s historic Smithfield meat market will close after over 800 years, with trading set to end after 2028. The City of London Corporation announced the decision on Tuesday, alongside the closure of Billingsgate fish market. Plans to relocate both markets to a £1 billion development in Dagenham were scrapped due to rising construction costs and inflation. Traders will be allowed to continue operations until at least 2028 and will receive financial compensation to support the transition. The Corporation also plans to introduce a bill in Parliament to relinquish its responsibility for the market. Policy chairman Chris Hayward called the decision a "positive new chapter," saying it would empower traders to create sustainable futures independently. Smithfield has been a centerpiece of London’s trade history since the 14th century.
