Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Supreme Court Rejects Chance to Step Into the Fight Over Transgender Student Rights

Caption: Supreme Court Rejects Chance to Step Into the Fight Over Transgender Student Rights. On January 16, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the Indiana public school district, declining to intervene in the debate over bathrooms for transgender students. 'The Independent' reports that federal appeals courts remain divided on whether restrictions on transgender students is a violation of federal law or the Constitution. The rejected case involved the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upholding an order granting transgender boys access to boys' bathrooms. The Chicago-based court's decision was then appealed by the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville in Indiana. In Richmond, Virginia, the federal appeals court ruled in favor of transgender students right. At the same time, the federal appeals court based in Atlanta, Georgia, ruled against transgender students' right to bathroom access. Legal battles revolving around transgender rights are ongoing across the U.S. 'The Independent' reports that at least nine states have restricted transgender students to only using bathrooms that match their assigned sex at birth. 7th Circuit Judge Diane Wood wrote that the involvement of the Supreme Court on the highly debated topic seems to be inevitable. "Litigation over transgender rights is occurring all over the country, and we assume that at some point the Supreme Court will step in with more guidance than it has furnished so far."
