Caption: **RAW VIDEO** On 3 August 2023, Americans marked National Watermelon Day. To celebrate, last week several of the animals at Brookfield Zoo were treated to the tasty summer fruit. Animal care staff sliced and cubed the watermelons for the western lowland gorillas, Galapagos tortoises, and Banana, a 3-year-old pygmy hippo, who also got a special slice shaped like the letter ‘B.” But, Layla, a 12-year-old black rhinoceros, Axhi, a 28½-year-old brown bear, and the Zoo’s two sloth bears—Kartik and Hani, received whole watermelons that they crushed and enjoyed eating the sweet insides. All the animals looked to enjoy their special watermelon meal, with the tortoises particularly enthusiastic recipients despite being one of the more sedate animals in their dining habits. Watermelon is one of the menu items that most of these animals receive during the summer, but it also is enrichment for others.
