There they were greeted by delighted villagers who have waited 18 months for the Ukrainian Army to arrive following the area’s capture by Russia following their invasion in February 2022. The village was liberated after “two months of fierce fighting” - which has been taking place since Ukraine began a counteroffensive earlier this summer. Ukrainian troops have advanced slowly due to well dug in multi-echelon Russian defences. However, Robotyne is a key strategic point on the road to Melitopol. If captured, the city would split Russian forces in Kherson and Crimea from those in the Eastern Donbas region.
