Caption: NYC Cultural Center Staff Resign After Canceling Acclaimed Author's Event. NPR reports that staff from 92nd Street Y, New York have announced their resignation shortly after a scheduled reading by author Viet Thanh Nguyen was canceled. Earlier this week, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author joined over 700 other writers in signing an open letter calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. "We can only express our grief and heartbreak for the victims of these most recent tragedies, and for their families, both Palestinians and Israelis." "But the unprecedented and indiscriminate violence that is still escalating against the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, with the financial and political support of Western powers, can and must be brought to an end.", Authors' open letter, via 'London Review of Books’. Shortly after the letter was published by the 'London Review of Books,' 92NY announced that Nguyen's reading had been “postponed". "As a Jewish organization we believe the responsible course of action right now is to take some time to determine how best to use our platform and support the entire 92NY community, so we made the difficult decision to postpone the October 20th event.", 92NY statement, via NPR. NPR reports that the poetry center's director and senior program coordinator both resigned from their posts following the cancellation of Nguyen's reading event. Since 1939, 92NY's Unterberg Poetry Center has served as a hub for readings and literary events, hosting writers like T.S Eliot, Marianne Moore and Sandra Cisneros. NPR reports that Nguyen said that he has yet to be directly contacted by 92NY in regards to the cancellation of his reading. "I have no regrets about anything I have said or done in regards to Palestine, Israel, or the occupation and war.", Viet Thanh Nguyen, via Instagram.
