Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Hong Kong Court Upholds Equal Inheritance Rights For Same-Sex Couples

Caption: Hong Kong Court Upholds Equal Inheritance Rights For Same-Sex Couples. On October 24, a Hong Kong court upheld a ruling that granted equal inheritance rights for same-sex couples. ABC reports that the news comes as the latest victory for Hong Kong's LGBTQ+ community. Hong Kong's Court of Appeal rejected the government's motion to overthrow a previous ruling that same-sex married couples face unlawful discrimination in regards to inheritance laws. "The differential treatment based on sexual orientation is apparent.", Peter Cheung, Hong Kong Justice of Appeal, via ABC. ABC reports that Hong Kong currently only recognizes same-sex marriages for specific purposes, including taxation, civil service benefits and issuing visas. Justice of Appeal Thomas Au acknowledged "an unacceptably harsh burden" on same-sex couples in Hong Kong due to the denial of legal entitlements. Last week, the same Hong Kong court upheld rulings supporting same-sex married partners being granted subsidized housing benefits. In September, a landmark ruling came down from Hong Kong's highest court, stating the government should create a framework for recognizing same-sex partnerships. Hong Kong has experienced a growing social acceptance of same-sex marriage, which has resulted in a number of government concessions won through legal cases in recent years. ABC reports that the latest decision is expected to strongly impact the lives of same-sex couples in Hong Kong, particularly those who married overseas.
