Caption: Kevin McCarthy Is Leaving Congress Early Won't Run for Reelection in 2024. The former House speaker made the announcement in a 'Wall Street Journal' op-ed. "I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started." "I will continue to recruit our country's best and brightest to run for elected office. The Republican Party is expanding every day, and I am committed to lending my experience to support the next generation of leaders.", Kevin McCarthy, via 'Wall Street Journal' op-ed. McCarthy was ousted as House speaker in October. His temporary successor, former speaker pro tempore Patrick McHenry, a McCarthy ally, announced that he will not seek reelection next year either. House Republicans, particularly those who voted to oust McCarthy, had mixed reactions about his retirement announcement, 'USA Today' reports. "I thank him for his service and wish him well.", Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., one of the eight GOP members who voted to oust McCarthy, via 'USA Today'. Matt Gaetz, on the other hand, took to X to simply write, "McLeavin'". Rep. Carlos Gimenez took to X to call McCarthy a "leader of conviction" with whom he has been "proud to stand alongside". Rep. Kevin Kiley called the former speaker "irreplaceable in terms of the value that he brought to our delegation and the entire conference". Once McCarthy leaves Congress, a special election to fill his spot must be declared by Gov. Gavin Newsom within 14 days. Once that declaration is made, the election must take place "within 126 to 140 days," according to 'USA Today’. THIS VIDEO MUST NOT BE EDITED FOR LENGTH TO COMBINE WITH OTHER CONTENT
