Caption: Fritz the Hippo, Cincinnati Zoo’s adorable water-dwelling resident, celebrates his first birthday on 3 August 2023. As it also happens to be World Watermelon Day, and hippos love watermelon, the fruit will be one of the many treats that he will receive during his celebration with his sister Fiona. “Fiona has been the center of attention since, in 2017, she became the first premature hippo to survive. She is still wildly popular, but people, including me, have also really fallen for Fritz…” said Cincinnati Zoo director Thane Maynard. To celebrate Fritz’s birthday, zoo chiefs have documented some of the amazing moments the young hippo has experienced in his first year including his playtimes with Fiona and mum Bibi. They have enjoyed splashy frolics in their enclosure - and Fritz has even ridden on mum’s back, though he fell off. He and Fiona have also bonded well after being carefully introduced to each other.
