Headline: UNCAPTIONED: Cool Canines Compete At World Dog Surfing Championships

Caption: Some cool-looking canines hit Linda Mar State Beach in California on 5 August 2023 for the World Dog Surfing Championships. Hounds of all kinds donned wetsuits to catch some surf near San Francisco and compete in categories including small, medium and large solo surfers, best human tandem and best multi-dog ride. Length of ride and style were among the criteria. There were also competitions for best beach fashion and best costume and a fetching contest for pooches who were less fond of a paddle. The event was attended by thousands of spectators and helped to raise money for local animal welfare groups, including the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA and Rocket Dog Rescue. Dog surfing was invented by Kevin Reed, who wrote the 2004 book, The Dog’s Guide to Surfing - and has now gone from strength to strength with competitions taking place across the world. As for the winners? Overall top dog was the tiny terrier Carson - who also won prizes in the small dog and dog/dog tandem category - alongside his pooch partners Rosie, and Charlie. Faith the surfing pitbull was in second, and Cherie, a French bulldog was in third.
