Caption: Minnesota and Colorado Seek to Bar Trump From 2024 Ballot. The Minnesota trial to remove former President Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot has begun at the state's Supreme Court. NBC reports that the Minnesota lawsuit and a separate Colorado case seek to have Trump removed from the ballot for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The lawsuits claim Trump violated Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars anyone who has “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” from holding office. In September, election reform group Free Speech for People, representing a group of Minnesota voters, filed a lawsuit against Secretary of State Steve Simon. The lawsuit claims that Simon rejected letters from Free Speech for People demanding that the state's highest court take action and remove Trump from the ballot. NBC reports that Simon has maintained that the secretary of state lacks the authority to bar a candidate from running for office. "In the case of presidential candidates, the major political parties will submit names of candidates to our office for the Presidential Nomination Primary by January 2, 2024." , "Those submissions will appear on the ballot for the March 5, 2024, contest unless a court says otherwise." , Steve Simon, Minnesota Secretary of State, via NBC. NBC reports that similar legal challenges revolving around the 14th Amendment have been filed in other states, including Michigan, Arizona and New Hampshire.
