Caption: OpenAI Working to Quell Potential Mutiny Amid Staff. Bloomberg reports that OpenAI said "intense discussions" were underway to unify the company after employees threatened to quit if Sam Altman doesn't return as CEO. According to vice president of Global Affairs Anna Makanju, OpenAI sent an internal memo aimed at rallying staff amid disarray over the ousting of Altman. The company's surprise appointment of former Twitch chief Emmett Shear as Altman's interim replacement only deepened concern amid staffers. On November 20, over 700 of OpenAI's 770 staff members signed a petition saying they would quit if Altman isn't re-hired and the board steps down. Following his ousting, Altman was recruited by Microsoft to head a new artificial intelligence team. In response to news of OpenAI staffers' discontent, Microsoft's chief technology officer said that OpenAI staff would have a job waiting at the software giant. Bloomberg reports that the potential mass exodus of talent from OpenAI to Microsoft comes after Altman was fired for disagreements over developing and monetizing AI. Other efforts to reinstate Altman are also underway by OpenAI investors led by Thrive Capital. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that he would not oppose Altman's reinstatement at OpenAI. OpenAI Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever, who also serves on the board, said that he "deeply regretted" participating in Altman's ousting. "We are continuing to go over mutually acceptable options and are scheduled to speak again tomorrow morning when everyone's had a little more sleep.", Anna Makanju, OpenAI vice president of Global Affairs, via Bloomberg.
