Jen Walpole, a registered Nutritional Therapist specialising in hormones, fertility, IVF & pregnancy nutrition, has explained how a Mediterranean diet is supportive of fertility outcomes. "The Mediterranean diet is the most revered for its benefits when it comes to supporting fertility, owing to its abundance of colour (vegetables, fruit) and healthy fats, with omega-3 fatty acids in particular." Jen Walpole, a registered Nutritional Therapist specialising in hormones, fertility, IVF & pregnancy nutrition says. "The thing about the Mediterranean diet is that nothing is excluded, it's more about the balance of how we consume our foods and this is as much about the food we eat as the social setting it is eaten in," the expert continues. According to Jen, the diet typically consists of at least "two servings of vegetables, 1-2 servings of low GI fruit (think berries or citrus), a portion of wholegrains, a portion of healthy fats such as nuts or seeds and/or dairy and then a protein source such as fish or white meat". Fish features more heavily (at least 2 or more servings per week) versus white or red meat, which are recommended 1-2 times per week each. "It supports fertility thanks to the antioxidants, omega-3, protein and fibre content which is key to our gut health and hormone balance" Jen Walpole, a registered Nutritional Therapist specialising in hormones, fertility, IVF & pregnancy nutrition says. Jen continues: "By focusing on whole foods, you would expect to consume less processed foods, which are bad for our blood sugar balance and waistlines - both problematic when it comes to fertility."
