Study Shows Food Packaging Is Contaminating Our Food with Microplastics. New research has revealed that everyday food packaging is shedding micro- and nanoplastics into our food and drinks. From tearing plastic wrap off meat and prepackaged fruit to opening bottles of milk and juice, plastic materials are contaminating what we eat. Researchers discovered that the act of opening and closing bottles and jars releases significant amounts of microplastics, which then enter the beverages. These particles were found in products like beer, canned fish, rice, tea bags, table salt, and even soft drinks. Lead researcher Lisa Zimmermann from the Food Packaging Forum explained that food packaging is directly responsible for this contamination. She emphasized that as packaging is used, more microplastics are released into the food. While scientists have long known about toxic chemicals leaching from plastics, this study sheds light on how food packaging itself is a significant source of microplastic exposure. Experts are concerned about the potential health risks, and David Andrews from the Environmental Working Group called the findings alarming, urging action to address this issue and protect consumers.
