Caption: Death Toll From Powerful Winter Storm Continues to Rise. ABC reports that an arctic blast continues to pound the United States with heavy snow and dangerously low temperatures from coast to coast. So far, there have been at least 37 weather-related deaths associated with the winter storm, with the most confirmed fatalities in Tennessee, 14. Nashville has received over 9 inches of snow since January 14, almost twice the state's annual average. As of the morning of January 18, over 92 million people in the U.S. were on alert for cold or snowy weather. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings and advisories from Montana to the New Jersey shoreline. Heavy snowfall in the Rocky Mountains has prompted several avalanche warnings across Colorado. Western New York State has been forecast to see bands of lake-effect snow, while the Northeast region is expected to see freezing temperatures and scattered snow. Temperatures across the Midwest are forecast to rise moderately, while more snow is expected as a storm system develops across the Plains and Great Lakes region. In the Northwest, heavy snowfall and powerful winds are forecast to continue causing concern, particularly at higher elevations. Meanwhile, the West Coast is expected to get inundated with heavy rains by the end of the week, with storms stretching into the weekend.
